Frequently asked questions
Whether you are seeking community acupuncture or an individual treatment, this section should answer some of your questions. Also, feel free to stop by and talk to us.
What types of conditions does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture reduces stress, supports immune function and improves overall well-being. Regular treatments also help many specific issues, ranging from alleviating the effects of cancer treatment, autoimmune conditions, back pain, chronic fatigue, and depression and anxiety. See a full list HERE.
What is your mask policy?
Wearing a mask is optional at our studio. Unlike other studios, we see more of you who are going through cancer treatment, living with chronic conditions, or are caregivers. Aimee will wear a mask during Community Acupuncture if you come in wearing a mask, are in cancer treatment, or are otherwise immune-compromised.
If you have acute respiratory symptoms, please reschedule your appointment and do not attend group classes. Thank you for helping us keep the most vulnerable in our community safe.
What do acupuncture needles feel like?
Many patients compare the insertion of acupuncture needles to a small mosquito bite. In some cases patients have very little sensation of the needle insertion. Different parts of the body, overall constitution and current health condition will affect sensitivity to needles. If you experience discomfort, tell your practitioner so needles can be adjusted. Once the needles are inserted you may experience a feeling of heaviness, distention or warmth around the acupuncture point or following the acupuncture meridian. The needles are left for about 20 to 30 minutes, which is very relaxing and a deeply healing time for patient. If you would need anything, simply look in the direction of the practitioner and someone will check in with you.
Do you reuse needles?
No, only sterile, disposable stainless steel acupuncture needles are used and then properly discarded after each treatment.
What do I do during a community acupuncture appointment?
When you come in, you will be greeted at the door and helped to a seat in the studio. There are comfortable zero gravity chairs or full recliners if you prefer or if you have mobility issues. Blankets and small pillows are also available to help you feel comfortable. After the intake, needles are inserted and left in for about 20 or 30 minutes. It is helpful to let your practitioner know if you are on a tight schedule. We have relaxing music playing but if you prefer silence, ear plugs are available or bring your own. Once the needles are removed, take your time in getting up after a treatment.
What do I need to do before coming to my first acupuncture appointment?
When scheduling your first acupuncture appointment, choose initial intake under services. This allows for more time with your practitioner. Please print and fill out the New Patient Intake Form prior to your initial acupuncture visit. Be sure to eat a little something before coming to your appointment; it’s best not to receive treatment on a completely empty stomach. Wear loose-fitting clothes to have access to various acupuncture points on the body. There is a private changing room at both studios, if needed. Many patients feel more comfortable if they go to the bathroom before treatment begins. Once seated, remove your socks and roll up your sleeves and pants legs. Relax.
How long should I plan for my appointment?
The first appointment includes a comprehensive intake and review of your health history and takes a little more than an hour. All follow up visits are about one hour, unless you indicate otherwise.
How often do I have to come for follow up appointments?
Frequency of visits will depend on your current health condition and your health goals. Patients with acute conditions (whether physical or emotional) or with severe symptoms will benefit from receiving acupuncture treatments two or three times a week. A community acupuncture setting makes this accessible and affordable. As your condition improves, once a week or every other week may be appropriate. Many healthy patients benefit from ongoing acupuncture treatments for health maintenance or de-stressing once or twice a month. Those who engage in athletic endurance activities are encouraged to use community acupuncture on a regular basis as part of a good recovery program.
If I bring my friend or partner, can we get a treatment at the same time?
Definitely. In community acupuncture, we accommodate multiple patients. Bring a friend or come in a small group. Scheduling an appointment is recommended.
